Monthly Irrigation Tips

Published in the ECHO Journal, April 2013

Jan – Monitor irrigation related water meters in “off season” for mainline leaks.

Feb – Pre-season irrigation review. Repair, check, and fine tune nozzles – avoid overspray.

Mar – Start irrigation systems, based on soil moisture needs. Use soil samples and short cycles to avoid overwatering and run-off.

Apr – Use slit seeding to overcome shallow rooted grassy weeds in turf to reduce hot spots in June/July.

May – Review irrigation system again. Think water saving opportunities – Mulch?

Jun – Record irrigation programming details – total minutes per week per station.

Jul – Use soil core samples to water only to root depth. Grow deeper roots.

Aug – Shorter days and cooler nights coming, start reducing irrigation schedules.

Sep – Install a rain sensor – help reduce unnecessary watering.

Oct – Cover backflow devices to help reduce damage from freezing.

Nov – Water only as needed. Spot water annuals and plants in overhang areas.

Dec – Consider weekly short cycle for each irrigation station to exercise valves. Avoid applying water on walkways.
